WGSU, the film
Yesterday I received a call during my show from Dhaval, a former DJ. A few years ago he made a short film called Catharsis, and he called to inform us of a review of it that's up on filmthreat.com. You can read it here.

Why is this in any way relevant to us?

1) Part of it was filmed in the WGSU bathroom.
2) It featuers several WGSUers as actors, and you may recognize some of them, especially if you are a junior or senior. They include:
- CP, our faculty advisor
- The Castawaves, who are currently in local rotation, and are former DJs (Morrissey and Jason)
- Mike Mahoney, former music director
- Dhaval himself
- Robin Cucurullo. I don't know who she is.

So, if you've ever wondered how good of an actor CP is or how our bathroom looks on camera, you can watch it
here, it's only about 12 minutes long.

Also made by Dhaval is a WGSU ad. We actually knew that existed because last year (I think) one of the promoters told Meg (our music director) that he did a search for Ted Leo on Google video and this advertisement for our station came up. The ad has Mike Mahoney in it too, and also former station manager Liz Boylan. You can watch it
here. (Hearts of Oak is in the background, if you're wondering about the Ted Leo connection.)

PB & J
First of all, I would like to apologize for my apparent inability to post videos on here properly. So I am just going to post links to them instead. Not quite as exciting as having them show up on this page, I know. I am more disappointed than you are.

OK, here is what I was going to write about, which I have shamelessly stolen from another blog but am going to post anyway because it's (very) indirectly related to our station:

If you've been paying attention to rotation at all this semester, (or if you like to spend your time checking out all sorts of indie music blogs and sites,) you should be pretty/very familiar with the song Young Folks by Peter Bjorn and John. Doesn't ring a bell? Don't quite remember how it goes? It's ok. Here's the link to the video on you tube. The video is not important to this post, it's just a way for you to hear the song if you don't know it:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=51V1VMkuyx0
Alright, so now that you have the song in your head, watch this video- it is so wonderful! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uh_8j8k39y0

In other news, I just replied to a comment that was made by an anonymous former DJ on an older post. I have no idea how long ago that comment was posted, but the person asked some questions, so I gave some answers.

Get Psyched!
Hey all,
Get them markers out cause this ones worth jotting down:
This Friday, March 30th will be forever etched into local Genny history/folklore as that time The Knight Spot hosted THE GENESEO PSYCHEDELIC MUSIC SHOWCASE!!! Thats right, this Friday, 9:00 at Geneseo's own The Knight Spot, some of the most highly tauted acts in the contemporary Psych/Indie/Dance/Weird/Really Weird Rock scene are coming to YOU!
Just which particular illustrious ensembles will be gracing our campus with their presence you ask?

<<< SPECIFICS >>>

Stab the Matador

The Stab the Matador?? As in, Stab the Matador, of MLB2006 The Game for X-Box and PS2 fame?? Thats right! THOSE GUYS!
This dashing quaternity of hunk-i-dudes are coming all the way from (just north of) the Big Apple to bring you all the indie that rocks. I've seen these guys more times than I can remember, and let me say this: They rock the party that rocks the party! Naw'msayin?

===>check em out: www.stabthematador.com

The Groits

Capital NYC new-psych (your guess is as good as mine) act. Into Jazz? Ambient? Psych? Noise? No?... oh well. They'll still be here. Solid-ass dudes.

===>Hear them... HERE

Death By Wallace

Here comes the boom! Thats about the only phrase my piffling little brain could muster when my friend Jeremy told me he could make it up here for this Psych Night shindig. Jeremy and James, together, Death By Wallace, have been giving self-avowed party animals a run for their money for a couple of years now. This is their third show I think. The first one they got 40 people written up by performing in an NYU dorm. Just the other week they played at Two Boots Pizza in downtown New York, where, after throwing some bottles in the air and, subsequently, inciting a near-mob scene, they were asked never to return. Not even for pizza. Story has it that James even smashed his keyboard at that gig-- the one in the picture-- and I don't think he has another one!
Until now they've more or less deliberately kept their shows to an annual basis, so this should be something very special. Not exactly sure what they've got cooking up for us here in Geneseo, but, on the phone, Jeremy did mentioned something about a PowerPoint presentation. And bloody dogs. Not a joke.

===>You can hear them on myspace, but if I were you, I'd just wait until the 30th.

And thats not even all! There will be some very special guests and even the likes of your very own peers will be getting up on stage. Dan, Ray and myself are giving it a shot.

One for the ladies
Hey all,

After dj Megaman's post, I was indeed inspired to post one on lucious indie rock man-babes. Then my computer froze and I had to go away for a while. sad, I know, but now i'm going to try again. OK. also, I have weird taste in what is attractive and not, so post your own if you disagree. Also, Brendan, You forgot Cathy Foster on your list.

Luke Jenner: on left w/ pocket tee...melt!
The Rapture

He is kind of not always good looking, but he wails like nobody's business. And he is so super friendly. Once he let us take a picture with him on Halloween. and he looks good in kid's skeleton costumes. yay!

Ted Leo and his Bass Player

So, I know Ted is 37. I don't care. Neither do you. anyhow. He's so cutie cute and makes all the girlies want to dance! bass player is on the left, he is hot in a retro way, and everytime i see them he is wearing that shirt and brown pants. minimalism, dude. Unfortunately Teddy drinks starbucks, which is wrong on so many levels...especially if its him.

Stephen Malkmus: 40s w/ a baby girl named Lottie and a dang wife.
Insidevaughn

You make my heart flutter. You are brilliant and are aging wonderfully. cheers! (Everything you touch is gold, including my heart!!)
SWOON.

Kevin Barnes: Because his make up is better than yours

.

No but seriously, he's adorable. except for the whole crazy nervous breakdown bit, but now it seems like we're friends right? right. Also, we could share clothes. <3>

Calvin Johnson, I love everything about you. I have seen him twice, once in a graveyard, the other time in a record store. Each time he was magical. also, his voice is booming and deep. I also adore him because of his record label. but thats another story for another blog post. He is probably at least 45, and I'm guessing he is married, but I don't know.

Ok, this is good for now! Blogger won't let me type in full page. I don't understand. so i am giving up. this is a very partial and odd list, but you should contribute too! see you tonight?

a salute to the babes of indie rock
Now, like any guy out there, I enjoy the occasional pretty lady now and then. Just to look at, of course, as women are objects of perfection to be placed on a pedestal and gazed at and never touched. That said, I've noticed in my tenure as a fan of indie rock that there are a lot of hottie-boom-botties to be found in this genre.

First up is occasional New Pornographers femme fatale Neko Case. Now first off, she has red hair and pale skin, which (as anyone who knows me already knows) nets her an instant 100 points plus. Beyond that, though, she's a total babe with a voice to match. Also she apparently loves beavers, and I respect anyone who adores our fine buck-toothed, dam-building animal brethren.

Next up is piano lady extraordinaire Regina Spektor. The first time I ever saw Regina was in her video "Us" on MTV2, where she's dressed up in a sort of elegant 40's garb and matching hairstyle. Being a big fan of vintage women's fashion (both to wear and look at), she grabbed my attention immediately. Also I have a poster of her chugging a 40 next to my bed, which just contributes to her classiness.

Here we have former Sleater-Kinney frontwoman Corin Tucker. She's a little plainer than some of the other ladies, but on the other hand she's so angry that I don't think I could say no even if I tried. And damn, can she wail my inhibitions away with that voice of hers.

Jenny Lewis is just cute as a button. How could you resist that? Plus she was in The Wizard the greatest movie/Nintendo commercial/Fred Savage vehicle ever filmed. The Watson Twins aren't bad either, I suppose, but they don't compare. Here's a haiku I wrote about Jenny Lewis:

Jenny where are you
I am lost in the ether
Obama oh-eight

wait just a minute how did this get here

Last up is The Pipettes - all three of them. They're adorable, and between the three of them they represent both the hot girls with glasses and the hot brunette subgroups. Plus there's just so much sass it's like a sass volcano ready to erupt sass all over the city of Sasseii.

So if you're a guy like me, or some sort of girl who likes other girls, who are some of your favorite ladies of indie rock?

positive feedback
Hey all. Today we were doing our show, and the guys at the Post office called. They wanted to say that they listen often and really love our station. They liked our music, and wanted us all to keep up the good work. They were calling to talk about the freaky prehistoric frilly shark, and the blues switch show. If you ever think no one is listening from town, now you know its not true. Most people won't call, but they're there. It made me feel really good about our station, so lets keep doing what we're doing and stay awesome.

A History of WGSU
Random facts I learned while cleaning out a couple of drawers in the WGSU office:

- We used to have live shows 24 hours a day, and most shows were 3 hours long. Some DJs did not get shows and they were on a sub list.

- Things were a lot stricter: at some point DJs had to audition, and I even found a folder of rejected DJ applications. I also found a letter informing a DJ that he has lost his show for missing it once without getting a substitute. He was allowed to apply again for the next semester.

- The shrinking of the Top 22 show: It used to be Top 35 (back when shows were 3 hours long), then it became Top 30. And since we've been here it's been 22, then 12, then nothing.
