Alright, so the year is very nearly over, which means you should all have been compiling your Top 10 lists of 2006 for the last four months or so. Lists are the only way one can really tell if they like something or not, and so without further ado:
DJ MEGAMAN'S TOP 10 OF 2006:
10. Belle & Sebastian - The Life Pursuit
This isn't my favorite Belle & Sebastian album, but a sub-par B&S record is still better than most! The songs are so full of joy it's hard not to be happy when listening along.
Fave tracks: White Collar Boy, The Blues Are Still Blue
9. The Pipettes - We Are The Pipettes
Probably the funnest (IT'S A WORD!) record I heard all year, The Pipettes are basically a modernized British version of 60's girl groups like The Supremes or The Chiffons. Pretty much impossible to not dance along with, and plus the girls are super-QT's :-*
Fave tracks: Pull Shapes, Your Kisses Are Wasted On Me
8. The Rapture - Pieces Of The People We Love
This didn't grab me as immediately as Echoes did, but after the AWESOME show at CMJ, I went back and listened to it again and lurved it. It's practically disco with all the cowbell and silly synth sounds, but it's just cresting on that line of almost-cheesy-but-still-awesome.
Fave tracks: The Devil, Whoo! Alright-Yeah... Uh Huh (W.A.Y.U.H.)
7. The Black Keys - Magic Potion
The Black Keys are just two dudes (guitar/vocals and drums) playing dirty blues rock 'n' roll. And they're really good at it. You'd almost expect the singer to be this overweight black guy who's been living in the Mississipi Delta all his life, not a white dude from Akron, Ohio. This album has some BADASS RIFFS that sound like Led Zeppelin sometimes.
Fave tracks: Just Got To Be, Modern Times
6. Beirut - Gulag Orkestar
Beirut are like Neutral Milk Hotel, only more Eastern European-sounding. That may sound hard to believe, but Zach Condon, the man behind Beirut, has a serious boner for Belarus or something. Regardless, the songs on this are all great, full of accordions and mandolins and trumpets and shit, and Condon really sounds like some kind of gypsy minstrel when he sings.
Fave tracks: Prenzlauerberg, Postcards From Italy
5. Joanna Newsom - Ys
Okay, I didn't like Joanna Newsom's first album all that much (THAT VOICE), but somehow she made this epic prog-orchestral-folk album and it's really really awesome. Her voice sounds less like an elf in a meat grinder and more like... Lisa Simpson this time, which is definitely an improvement, but the string arrangements and intricate storytelling lyrics really make this album stand out.
Fave tracks: Emily, Monkey And Bear
4. Scritti Politti - White Bread Black Bear
Scritti Politti started as a quasi-anarchist post-punk band in Wales in the late 70's, then morphed into a white-boy R&B/funk outfit in the mid-80's, and now is really just singer/songwriter Green Gartside harmonizing his own vocals with guitar and laptop beats. Strangely enough all three incarnations are really good, and this is my favorite out of them. Some of the songs are strangely sweet despite him sounding like he's 14 years old.
Fave tracks: The Boom Boom Bap, Snow In The Sun
3. Gnarls Barkley - St. Elsewhere
I got caught up in the hype! But this album is so good I can't resist. Terrific production courtesy of Mr. Dangermouse, plus Cee-Lo Green's awesome vocal delivery and some really great songs.
Fave tracks: Crazy, Transformer
2. The Knife - Silent Shout
I had never even HEARD of The Knife until we saw their bizarre yet awesome show at CMJ this year, but their music turned out to be one of the most exciting things I've heard all year. I was never much of an electronica fan but this album kicks all sorts of buttock.
Fave tracks: Like A Pen, Forest Families
And finally...
1. The Decemberists - The Crane Wife
Yeah, I had to give it up to The Decemberists this year. Like with The Rapture, this record didn't grab me at first like Picaresque did, but with every listen it got better and better. "The Island" is like some kind of crazy Yes-meets-Neil Young amalgamation, and all the songs seem really heartfelt despite being about things Colin Meloy has probably never encountered in his life. Big ups!
Fave tracks: The Island, Yankee Bayonets, O! Valencia, Shankill Butchers, EVERYTHING!
So what's yours, guys?
1.TV on the Radio – Return to Cookie Mountain
2.Grizzly Bear- Yellow House
3.The Hold Steady – Boys and Girls in America
4.Viva Voce – Get Yr Blood Sucked Out
5.Cat Power –The Greatest
6.The Decemberists – the Crane Wife
7.Vetiver – To Find Me Gone
8.The Raconteurs –Broken Boy Soldiers
9.Earl Greyhound – Soft Targets
10. Bright Black Morning Light – self titled
* I haven’t actually listened to some of these records,
they just appear on this list to make it more indie/hip.
10. Nelly Furtado-Loose.
seriously, who can resist. I know promiscuous was on all of your summer mixes.
9. Mountain goats-Get lonely.
Not only do i love love the title, but John D. has done it again!
8. The Capstan Shafts-Euridice Proudhon.
I am all about two things-vermont, and home recording. Also, this guy writes awesome diy pop songs, and I love him for it.
7. The decemberists- the crane wife.
LOVE!!
6. The Rapture-Pieces of the People we love.
They have kept up with their hot, nasty dance punk stylings, even though I was pretty sure dance punk was dead. Thanks guys! Plus, they were totaly awesome to see live, they have a good sense of humour.
5. Belle and Sebastian-The Life Pursuit.
Also not one of my favorite Belle and Sebastian albums. But that doesn't matter because it is still really good. I listened to this a lot in the summertime driving around, its purrfect.
4. The Blow-Paper Television.
I reallly really love this album a ton. Its so sweet! Every song on it is a true pop gem. It makes me want to be best best friends with khaela and jonas. They are very cute. You should probably youtube this band to see live performances and videos...you'll see! I struggled with this being at number 4, I thought it should be higher, but the top 3 are just...so..good.
3. TV on the Radio-Return to cookie mountain.
For a while, this was all i would listen to. I was completely blown away. its incredibly well written, and you know its solid from the first track. I was a lover is really just crazy good. but so is the rest of the album too.
2. The Knife-Silent Shout.
Like Brendan, I hadn't heard them before we saw them at cmj, but then we did and my life was changed forever. Honest! I do like electronic music, though i don't know much about it, but the knife really impressed me. They aren't just electronic, they are dark and weird and maybe gave me nightmares. maybe. but they also have this great pop sensibility, despite all of their really creepy shit. and being brother and sister...either way, I want the dvd for christmas. Also, they have a great website if you're curious about them. AND their live show is titz. really really! whats better than not knowing if there are really people up there, and once you realize there are, then being really creeped out! Their visuals are just wild! and then we came hom from cmj, and I was hooked. I looked up their videos and such all the time, and then my roommate got hooked, and then dj lanana got hooked, and then it was dj winecellar, and then it was dj markski. all thanks to russell. Thanks Russell!
1. Joanna Newsom-Ys.
I did love her first album, and when i read about Ys, i was afraid I would not like it. something you should understand about me as a critic and music lover is that when i get it in my head that i dont like something, its awfully hard for me to like it. SO before even listening to this, i was truly biased (stupid bloggers), but on first listen I realized it was probably some of the best music I have ever heard. It is really a masterpiece of "madrigal prog rock" as zach calls it, and whatever your feelings are on Joanna Newsom, you can get passed them from Ys. Its just beautiful. side story--Two years ago, andrea my roommate asked me what I thought was really beautiful, and I said Joanna Newsom's music. Most people might say things like sunsets, or beaches, or flowers. but I go w/ this weird, elf-like woman who plays the harp and writes good music. This album reinforces that for me. It is much fuller than the Milk-eyed Mender, more instruments, longer songs, backgrounds that make you take note even by themselves. Everytime i listen to it, I get wrapped up in it! and that is why its my number one.
Thats my list! its been a good year!
Some honorable mentions--Hot chip: warning, JT: Future love/sex sounds, Camera Obscura: Lets get out of this country, Ris Paul Ric: Puple blaze.
CHEERS!!
10 - The Capstan Shafts - Euridice Proudhon
Two years ago, WGSU recieved a paper wrapped, hand decorated CDr with "The Capstan Shafts" written on in. We listened, and former DJ and WGSU enthusiast Brad Kerr exclaimed "Man, does this COOK." Brad wrote back to the capstan shafts asking why he was so awesome. The Capstan Shafts responded by sending three more CDr albums, all of them released by Yellow Mica Records.
The Capstan Shafts is one man in vermont writing and recording FLAWLESS pop gems in his bedroom. Everything he touches is musical gold. He's never even played live. Euridice Proudhon is his first album packaged in a jewel case. It's superb.
Fav Tracks - Sleepcure Theory Advancer
9 - The Evens - Get Evens
Ian Mackaye is one of my heroes. One of the most productive and influential members of the dischord records roster, he's been behind bands like Minor Threat (inventors of sXe), Embrace (inventors of emo), Fugazi (inventors of post-emo), and now THE EVENS (acoustic post-emo). There are several reasons why the Evens are great. First is that it is a duo of Ian and Amy Farina (drummer, the warmers) and they both sing. Second, they only play in non-traditional venues, such as museums and rest homes. Finally, Ian Mackaye is still very much a punk rock visionary. Get Evens is the second record released by the Evens.
8 - The Liars - Drum's Not Dead
Now I love me some The Liars. They burst on the scene with a very edgy dance-punk album when dance punk was still a thing. Then, the Liars realized that dance punk couldn't go anywhere. The result is their third long-player and it is brilliant. The Liars are pushing boundaries and being FOR REAL. Do you know that keeping it real is now open 24-7, and The Liars are the managers?
7 - Yo La Tengo - I am not afraid of you and I will beat your ass.
Ironic title, check. Staple band of classic indie-rock past, check. A great album of consistently great rock songs, double check.
One time my friend was going to a Yo La Tengo show in Tennessee. As he was walking in he watched a car crash into a brick wall, and out climbed Yo La Tengo's drummer. "Don't worry," she said. "It's a rental."
6 - The Thermals - The Body, The Blood, The Machine
I've loved the The Thermals ever since I heard an acoustic edit of 'No Culture Icons' on the loop show. I personally love every Thermals song ever made. Their latest album is their tightest and most conceptually sound. That doesn't mean it's a concept album, just that it's very relevant.
5 - The Rapture - Pieces of the Ones You Love
Now, the Rapture invented dance punk. Then it was three years before they made another album. Lo and behold, it was dancey but not punk! In fact, it's excellently dancey. Whoo, alright, yeah Uh-huh!
Fav track - Don Gon Do It
4 - Belle & Sebastian - The Life Pursuit
B&S have slowly transformed from bedroom indie pop, to polished indie retro pop. Their live show is fantastic; You can tell that B&S have been doing this for ten years, and that they've mastered it. Life Pursuit is a complete pop album. Go Scotland!
Fav Tracks - For the Price of a Cup of Tea
3 - TV on the Radio - Return to Cookie Mountain
My favorite singles are on this album. TVOTR have produced a record that doesn't dawdle but cuts right to the point. More 'social' than 'political,' it's an album you can believe in while dancing your hiney off. Not to mention that Tunde's voice is fantastic.
Fav Tracks - I was a lover, Hours
2 - The Blow - Paper Television
When Khaela Maricich teamed up with Jonah, something clicked. Blow albums up to this point were clever but tended to meander. This one is a gem, a real hit. Khaela's lyrics and vocals are wry and well writ, and the delivery is sweet and sour and perfectly in step with Jonah's beats. The beats, meanwhile, make you want to get down. From the marching band cadences of "long list of girls" to the anthemic "fists up," this is an album that I will probably listen to every day for the next six months. Did I mention that all of the songs are about sex?
Fav Tracks - Long List of Girls, Fists Up, Pile of Gold
1 - Joanna Newsom - Ys
The word of the year is EPIC, and nothing is more epic than YS. It's the best prog album we've heard in years. In fact, I can't remember that last prog album that wasn't mired in self-indulgence, elf battles, or lazy jam-funk. Many people will talk about indulgence or elfs when they try to find something wrong about YS, but they'll be wrong. Joanna Newson is not indulgent for playing the harp, and her elf voice is quirky but not annoying. Ultimately, the songs are so good that anyone should get passed their qualms and fall in love with this record.
Ys is best enjoyed next to a fire place with the lyric sheet close at hand, and a hot cocoa or tea at the ready.
Fav Tracks - There are only five, so all of them!
yeah i just love this band a lot
9. Young Machetes- Blood Brothers
The more I listen to this album, the more i love it. i decided to review it because i knew i didnt like blood brothers and this album proved me wrong
8. Dying to Say This to You- The Sounds
so much fun
7. Acoustics- Hella
i love what they do all the time and to hear all their old songs again was a blast!
6. Bell & the Hammer- This Day & Age
this is here because i liked them before they started to get big and were just a local band, and this album had a lot better production. they are on hiatus now because thier lead singer is "moving on to bigger and better things"
5. Greatest Hits of the Sixties- Barry Manilow
i love barry manilow. i am not afraid to say it
4. Three's Co.- The Tyde
i reviewed this for rotation and it was the only one i think i've ever reccommended for heavy
3. Saosin- Saosin
now i have been into saosin for a long time. i am even a moderator on their fan site.
2. Happy Hollow- Cursive
even without gretta, they rock
1. Thriller- Michael Jackson (its always the best album)
wow, i mean greatest album of all time anyone?
2. The Knife – Silent Shout
3. TV on the Radio – Return to Cookie Mountain
4. Margot and the Nuclear So and So’s – The Dust of Retreat
5. Gnarls Barkley – St. Elsewhere
6. Camera Obscura – Let’s Get Out of This Country
7. The Raconteurs – Broken Boy Soldier
8. The Dears – Gang of Losers
9. Nelly Furtado – Loose
10. Soul Position – Things Go Better With RJ and Al
Honorable Mentions: (aka albums I’ve only heard 1 or 2 songs from)
Artic Monkeys – Whatever People Say, That’s What I’m Not
Ben Kweller – Self Titled
The Duke Spirit – Cuts Across the Land
The Rapture – Piece of the People We Love
POS – Audition
