A History of WGSU
Random facts I learned while cleaning out a couple of drawers in the WGSU office:

- We used to have live shows 24 hours a day, and most shows were 3 hours long. Some DJs did not get shows and they were on a sub list.

- Things were a lot stricter: at some point DJs had to audition, and I even found a folder of rejected DJ applications. I also found a letter informing a DJ that he has lost his show for missing it once without getting a substitute. He was allowed to apply again for the next semester.

- The shrinking of the Top 22 show: It used to be Top 35 (back when shows were 3 hours long), then it became Top 30. And since we've been here it's been 22, then 12, then nothing.

I used to be a dj at WGSU, back in the days of the top 30 countdown and just noticed this blog. I'm really surprised that you don't have live 24 hour programming. Do ou pre-record shows? And you don't have to audition?

You might be interested to know that a dj once lost a show for playing Kenny Rogers's "The Gambler" after being told not to play it.

Hello anonymous former DJ,

We have a pre-recorded loop show that plays while there is no live DJ at the station. It is currently about 11 hours long, and we update it and change stuff around every so often.

DJs don't exactly audition, they just apply and go through training, and do a little "test" at the end of training, but it's not really an audition. It's just to show us they learned what they need to know.

Also, you might like to know that we are now back to having a top 12.

I was a DJ at WGSU from 1991-1994, and Station Manager there from 93-94... yes, we used to have to turn away DJ wannabees.... all sorts of different types of shows.... make sure you get the most out of the experience Geneseoians....

Yeah, I hosted the Top 22 countdown when it made the drop from 30 to 22 (to fit into 2 hours). It had a nice ring, "The WGSU Top 22." I won't admit how I made up the list each week, but let's just say it wasn't scientific. Ha!

James Not Jim

probably exactly the same way we came up with the lists for the top 12... or at least an equally non-scientific method.

I too was a dj at WGSU way back in the day too, but I never actually went to GSU. When I was in high school at SHS, a friend was friends with someone yada yada yada and got me the 3am to 7am shift on Saturday/Sunday mornings. I was 15 and my mother would drop me off at the station. I had no idea what the hell I was doing, but I figured it out soon enough. When my junior year rolled around, I had a Saturday afternoon slot (better) AND I could drive myself to the station(way better).
I still remember some of those PSAs I used to have to play: Jon Denver's 'Plant a Tree for your tomorrow' anyone?
I had a super awesome time- thanks for the mammories wgsu!

That seems pretty harsh just for missing one show. Sounds like they ran the place like a major corporation.
