So last night, as only about half of you know......we had our first mandatory dj meeting. Mostly we went over the correct way to fill out logs, and why its important. We also talked about rotation--please oh please follow the cards so everything gets equal play (we got a complaint from an avid listener (who wasn't me! weird) that said they had heard the same song 3 times in 2 hours. that just ain't right!), we also have completed our staff rotation--play whatever song you want off of whatever cd you pull from the cards, and new hip hop, as well has local! yay! each spot on the cd playlist log has a corresponding rotation.
Then we moved on to fun things!! we are doing our Thanksgiving pot luck again this year, it will be in Ontario Hall, Saturday November 18th, time tba. We will probably do a football game beforehand too. I'll probably make a turkey or two, and we'll have sign ups for what you can bring! YAY!
MARATHON-this will be an overnight dj marathon, complete with live music. If you can play an instrument, we want you!! This will be Friday December 1, starting at 10 after the hockey game.
and finally, We are starting DJ of the MONTH! the award for best dj team went to Joe Cooper and Gabrielle Johnson, 8 am on saturday--perfect attendence, delightful!
DJ of the month is Sarah Wolfsont! She is super awesome and classy on the mic. If we had the chardonnay elite this semester, she would be our guest. all the time. Thursdays 6-8, check her out!!
And thats everything! We'll be posting updates from CMJ, so keep checking back.
To be prog rock, a band must have at least three out of the following five qualities:
1. Epic 20-minute keyboard and/or flute solos
2. A drumset that contains at least 18 different pieces
3. Lyrics referencing Lord of the Rings, science fiction, or some kind of story about unicorns the bassist dreamed up in a peyote haze
4. A fanbase consisting of avid readers of this type of literature, who possibly spend their weekends holed up in the basement with a 2 liter bottle of Mountain Dew and at least four 20-sided dice
5. The most ridiculous goddamn fashion sense imaginable
Rick Wakeman of Yes in his natural habitat, displaying his brilliant plumage in an apparent mating ritual
Now, with such a set of features as that, who couldn't love progressive rock? But sadly, there are some out there who don't share the love of this wonderful music. They call it "gay", or "nerd music", or "really gay", or "What the fuck is this gay shit", or "too long", or "pretentious", or "Jesus Christ this is some really shitty music, what the hell is wrong with you."
This is the classic anti-conformity anthem "Freewill" by Libertarian Canadian power-trio Rush. Just look at the crowd! Despite the fact that he's a 6'2" vulture with a Donald Duck voice, bassist/singer Geddy Lee is a total badass! Rush is proof that the Canadians really know what they're doing, as if poutine wasn't a big enough clue already.
Finally, here is lesser known British prog band Camel, performing the epic "Rhayader/Rhayader Goes to Town" suite off of their classic album "The Snow Goose". Any song that opens with a flute solo automatically goes in my "Awesome shit" playlist, and this is no exception. Nevermind the fact that the lead guitarist/flutist looks like Bill Gates with an overbite, or that the band has pound-for-pound more mullets than a NASCAR convention, or the fact that they had a three-part suite about Gandalf the White on one of their early albums. Such display of talent!
I hope that by now I've managed to convince you just how great prog rock truly is - that is if you didn't love it already, which I'm sure you already did. If you want more, just check out any of the bands mentioned in Wikipedia's handy article on progressive rock. I guarantee you'll like it better than this "Indi(ana?) Rock" I've heard so much about!* Good night and good luck!
Welcome one and all to the grand opening of the official WGSU blog! Now, there are a few reasons we decided to start this thing up this year:
1. To allow more up-to-date posting of WGSU news and events 2. To allow a place for WGSU DJs and friends to come together and share thoughts and ideas
And um... well, that's about it. But what we need is contribution from YOU! Whatever you want to post, whether it's album or concert reviews, just talking about bands you like, or anything really. It doesn't even have to be music related, as long as you feel like sharing it with the WGSU community.
So if you're part of the WGSU family and you want to be involved, follow these handy directions:
1. E-mail me (bhk2@geneseo.edu) with your name/DJ name/etc. 2. I'll send out an invite via e-mail. Follow the link and create an account on Blogger.com - your username can be whatever, it'll ask you to create a display name that'll show up on your posts. This can be either your DJ name or your real name! If it asks you to create a new blog, just make up some random name, you can delete the extra blog later. 3. To post in the blog, just go to Blogger.com and log in. Click on WGSU: the official blog, and under the posts tab, hit Create. Voila! If you want to comment on someone else's post, just click on the comments underneath. 4. You can edit your profile with whatever info you want, too. If you feel comfortable with it, put in your first/last name in your profile - it makes it easier to keep track of who's in the members list.
If you have any other questions, feel free to e-mail me (DJ Megaman) at pablogigante@gmail.com or bhk2@geneseo.edu.
So let's start things off with a question. What's the secret shameful 90's song that you can't help but sing along with whenever you hear it?
Personally, I think Will Smith's "Wild Wild West" is probably the greatest song ever recorded by human beings.
